Is One Haircut a Year Enough? Here’s the Truth from a Trichologist

People ask me all the time if they really need to get haircuts more than once a year. And honestly? Sometimes the answer is no. If your hair hasn’t been color-treated, you practice intentional heat styling, and you’re consistent with a solid care routine, you might be able to get away with it. But for most people, once a year just isn’t enough—and here’s why.

Hair grows in cycles. Each strand is in its own phase: growing, resting, or shedding. That means the hair on your head isn’t all the same length or age, and it certainly doesn’t grow in perfectly even. So even if your ends look okay to the eye, chances are, some sections are getting weak, uneven, unbalanced. Over time, that starts to show up as a wispy shape, fraying, or breakage that no product or mask can really fix.

And then there’s the seasonal damage. Our hair goes through a lot—scarves, rough towels, sun, skipped heat protectant, high ponytails, friction from collars or pillowcases—all of it adds up. Especially if you’re not balancing it out with masks, leave-ins, or protective styling, it starts to show. A haircut can be your reset. A clean slate to snip off the damage and let the healthier parts thrive. A haircut is also a chance to play into a great optical illusion. An experienced well-trained hairstylist will be able to aerate lift into your haircut, play into a vibe you have been feeling, densify the weak spots, and rebalance the weight of the hair. We can also give you tips and teach you how to cut your bangs if we've got a spare minute!

But here’s the part I really care about: a good haircut isn’t just about scissors. When you come in, I’m paying attention. I’m checking on your scalp. I’m asking about your habits and giving you updated tips that actually work for your hair. I’m looking out for patterns of breakage, areas of concern, or routines that might be holding you back. I’m not here to scold you. I’m here to support your goals and help you achieve your best hair day!

Out of all the self-care services out there, a haircut is one of the most underestimated. It can include a relaxing shampoo, a neck and scalp massage, aromatherapy, and intentional touch. Your hairdresser will help you plan your ideal look, work diligently, and can support you in your time in our chair. You walk out with something real and visible—and if it’s done right, you feel lighter, clearer, and more put together. For a lot of my clients, it’s one of the few times they really let someone take care of them.

And beyond that? Your hairdresser is sometimes the first person to notice something off. I’ve spotted early signs of scalp conditions, hair loss, broken skin, and even changing moles. Especially as a clinical trichologist, I’m trained to catch the small stuff, before it becomes big stuff. I’m not a doctor, but I can provide scope images, document what I see, and help you bring those observations to your healthcare provider. We’re not just stylists—we’re part of your support system.

So, is one haircut a year enough? Maybe. But only if your routine is rock solid and your hair isn’t dealing with much stress. In some hair types, the cuticle scales are so dense and locked in together that the hair looks "healthy" in almost all circumstances, with perhaps a little bit of scalp care needed! For everyone else, a regular cut isn’t just about looking clean—it’s part of your ongoing hair wellness. It’s one small choice that supports the bigger picture.

And when it’s done with intention, it becomes so much more than maintenance. It becomes care.
